One Global Index

To follow The Lean Investor methodology, you need an index fund that captures the entire global stock market in a single asset.
A true Global Index tracks the entire global economy by meeting 3 core criteria:

  1. Geographic Markets: It bundles both Developed Markets (e.g., US, Europe, Japan, ...) and Emerging Markets (e.g., China, India, Brazil, ...).
  2. Company Sizes: It captures all capitalizations, including Large, Mid, and Small Caps (smaller, fast-growing companies).
  3. Economic Sectors: It automatically diversifies across all 11 global sectors (Technology, Financials, Healthcare, Consumer Discretionary, Industrials, Communication Services, Consumer Staples, Energy, Materials, Utilities, and Real Estate).

The Standard : MSCI ACWI IMI

"Developed + Emerging Markets (Large & Mid & Small Caps)"

A Global Index based on the MSCI ACWI IMI standard provides automatic, self-correcting exposure to the entire global economy. By combining both Developed and Emerging markets across all company sizes, it tracks roughly 9,000 businesses and captures 99% of the world's investable market capitalization in a single, unchangeable fund.

Deconstructing the Name:
MSCI: Morgan Stanley Capital International — The independent global institution that builds and maintains the index.
ACWI: All Country World Index — Enforces the inclusion of both Developed Markets and Emerging Markets.
IMI: Investable Market Index — Enforces the inclusion of all company sizes.
Sector Diversification: All 11 Global Sectors — The index automatically spreads your wealth across every sector of the economy.

Note: In Europe, approved funds must carry the UCITS label. This is a strict European consumer protection law that guarantees your money is held in a separate legal entity, making your investments 100% safe if the fund manager goes bankrupt.

📦 Approved ETF Implementation (For European Residents)

  • SPDR MSCI ACWI IMI UCITS ETF
    • Official Fund Page: State Street Global Advisors (SPDR)
    • ISIN: IE00B3YLTY66
    • Replication: Physical (Optimized sampling)
    • Management Fee (TER): 0.17% per year
    • Distribution Policy: Accumulating (Acc) — Dividends are automatically reinvested by the fund, eliminating manual transaction drag.

📦 Approved ETF Implementation (For Non-EU / International Residents)

  • Vanguard Total World Stock ETF
    • Official Fund Page: Vanguard Official Page
    • Ticker / Symbol: VT
    • Replication: Physical (Full replication)
    • Management Fee (TER): 0.07% per year
    • Distribution Policy: Distributing (Quarterly) — US law forces dividend distribution. To maintain a 100% automated pipeline, you must enable DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) inside your broker account to auto-reinvest all cash instantly.

The Close Alternative : FTSE All-World

"Developed + Emerging Markets (Large & Mid Caps)"

This index covers roughly 4,300 companies across developed and emerging countries. While it technically excludes the smallest 10% of the market (Small Caps), it still captures approximately 85-90% of the global market capitalization. It remains an outstanding, highly liquid alternative that respects the geopolitical self-correcting protocol of our methodology.

⚠️ Incomplete for a Global Portfolio

The following indices are excellent products, but they do not cover the full global market on their own. Using them as a single asset creates blind spots and leads to poor diversification across markets and sectors:

  • MSCI World: Despite its name, this index only tracks Developed Markets. It completely excludes Emerging Markets and Small Caps. To get full global coverage, you would be forced to manually add and rebalance a second ETF, which breaks our rule of 100% single-asset automation.
  • S&P 500: This index only tracks the 500 largest companies in the United States. While these are massive multinationals, it provides zero exposure to Europe, Asia, or emerging economies, leaving your portfolio 100% dependent on the economic future of a single country.
